hi! Long time volunteer here, though this is my first post. I recently made a contact online who's a member of the Moorish Science Temple, an Islamic sect that believes: * The Qur'an is entirely true and has been perfectly preserved. * The Bible is ALSO entirely true and has been perfectly preserved!
* The Bible and the Qur'an, if properly translated and understood, are not contradictory. * The proper resultant faith is Islam (although Christians and Jews will go to Heaven as well). * The Hadith are not trustworthy and should be disregarded entirely.
When I asked what sources he uses to understand the context of the Qur'an (there had to be something, right?), he mentioned a specific text of Islamic history (can't remember what it was called now), rather than any Hadith. I pointed out that this historical text he trusted was based upon Hadith, he called me a bigot. My experience with my MSTA friend was that he chooses VERY specific (and obviously very unorthodox) understandings of passages in both books to harmonize the Abrahamic faiths into one. He insists that his understanding of Quranic Arabic is flawless and that everybody else on earth is understanding Islam completely wrong.
By the way, he cut me out and stopped talking with me before we even got to the harsher realities of Islam, such as Muhammad's horrifying life.
I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this group (or other Qur'an-only Muslims), and if their experience was similar, and if they had any more success than I did! Also, my acquaintance has a Youtube channel where he somehow set up a dialogue with Vocab Malone and Robert Spencer, which I haven't been able to watch yet but I'm sure it's informative of his views...
